Proposition 209

1996

Despite a hard-fought battle against it, California passes Proposition 209, which prohibits the state of California from considering race, gender, or ethnicity in public employment, public education, and public contracting and thus ends affirmative action programs throughout the state. APALC spearheads a coalition of Asian American leaders and groups united against Prop 209, and also conducts exit polls which finds a majority of Asian American voters opposed to Prop 209.  APALC also plays a supportive role in Coalition for Economic Equity v. Wilson, an unsuccessful constitutional challenge to Prop 209.
