UC Irvine Hate E-Mail Case

1996

UC Irvine hate e-mail case: Nearly 60 Asian American students at UC Irvine receive threatening email messages from Richard Machado, a former UC Irvine student. Machado is charged with sending email threats to “personally make it [his] ‘life career’ to ‘find, hunt down and kill’” the Asian students if they did not leave the university. The message is signed “Asian hater.” APALC successfully urges the U.S. Attorney to file hate crime charges, resulting in the first government prosecution and conviction of a federal hate crime in cyberspace. APALC also works with the students who testify at trial.
