UPLIFT - Elevating the Work of ASPIRE-LA

By Trina Pasumbal

ASPIRE LA Organizer

In case you haven’t heard the news, APSIRE-LA has changed our name! We are now UPLIFT!  This rebranding process began in the summer of 2015 and a year later, UPLIFT was born.

We wanted to begin a journey that really honed in on who we are as an organization. We went back to our roots.  We started as IDEAS at UCLA, then with support, grew to ASPIRE and now, with the support of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-LA, we’ve become a community organization. Throughout our journey we never felt that we were alone, despite what our undocumented experience might have led us to feel.  We pursued this rebranding process to ground ourselves and to center our community and our family of undocumented API youth.

We believe that our new name and mission statement  matches our goals and vision for our community. As our work largely involves leadership development, community organizing, activism, supporting membership, and uplifting the narratives of undocumented APIs, UPLIFT is the perfect name  Through this rebranding journey we were able to grow into a more intentional, and self-aware organization that truly moves our members and community forward.

UPLIFT members gathered in a circle during our very first UPLIFT Retreat August, 2016

Our new name signifies the growth of our organization and our movement.  Years ago undocumented API’s would have been a completely unheard community, but due to the work of organizations like UPLIFT *ASPIRE-LA, ASPIRE, RAISE, Asian Americans Advancing Justice- LA and APALA our voices have been elevated. Now this exponential growth has taken us to new levels.  Now we are able to take the reins of our own organization.

We want to continue this work and to continue centering undocuAPI narratives. We are humbled and grateful to those that have guided us throughout this entire process. We invite the entire community to come and celebrate this very important step in our organizational growth with us at our Open House event on Sept 9th at 5:30pm.
