O'Melveny & Meyers LLP, Bank of America and Advancing Justice-LA

In late July 2016, in an innovative pro bono collaboration, members of the Bank of America in-house legal department volunteered alongside attorneys and staff from the law firm of O’Melveny & Myers LLP at a citizenship services clinic.  Under the guidance of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-LA’s Citizenship Project, over 50 volunteers helped to provide over 30 individuals with naturalization services that day.

Although Advancing Justice-LA has worked with pro bono attorneys and volunteers from both O’Melveny and Bank of America separately in the past, this was the first-ever pro bono partnership between all three organizations.  The clinic provided a unique opportunity for Bank of America and O’Melveny to volunteer together and have a chance to get to know each other, all while serving Advancing Justice-LA clients.

Bank of America and O’Melveny volunteers served a wide array of community members that day, from countries as diverse as Belize, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, and Thailand, and ranging in age from 18 to 79 years old.  Volunteers also helped most of the clients complete citizenship application fee waivers, representing thousands of dollars in savings for these clients.  O’Melveny generously hosted the clinic at its offices in downtown LA.  All involved look forward to repeating the collaboration again in the future.
