2020 Census Communications Coordinator (Fixed-Term)

Position Summary: Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Los Angeles’ Demographic Research Project (DRP) seeks a 2020 Census Communications Coordinator to support the creation, translation, printing, and dissemination of community outreach materials as part of efforts to promote Asian American and Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander participation in the 2020 Census. The Communications Coordinator will also support media relations, including earned and social media.
 
Information drawn from the census will determine the allocation of Congressional seats to states, the drawing of legislative boundaries as part of the statewide redistricting process, and how trillions of dollars in federal funds are spent.  
 
This position is a full-time, temporary position beginning in May 2019 and ending in September 2020.
 
Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Monitor availability of Census Bureau materials in Asian and Pacific Islander languages;
  • Coordinate creation, translation, and printing of community outreach materials;
  • Coordinate and track dissemination of community outreach materials to key partners throughout California;
  • Coordinate development and maintenance of website to house 2020 Census resources;
  • Coordinate earned media opportunities, including drafting press advisories/releases, contacting media, and organizing press conferences;
  • In coordination with Advancing Justice - LA staff, establish and maintain relationships with mainstream and ethnic media statewide;
  • Coordinate social/non-traditional media outreach strategy, including the use of social networking sites, blogs, etc.;
  • Assist in providing communications trainings and technical assistance for key partners;
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent;
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience;
  • Experience developing community education materials;
  • Experience working with both traditional and social media;
  • Familiarity with AAPI communities, especially Southeast Asian or Pacific Islander;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work with diverse racial and ethnic groups;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work flexible hours (some evenings and weekends);
  • California driver’s license, insurance and access to a car preferred;
  • Fluency in an Asian or Pacific Islander language preferred;
Compensation: Depending on experience. Parking provided.
