Orange County Community Advocate (Vietnamese)

Position Summary: The Community Advocate is a part-time or full-time position, working in the Advancing Justice - OC office under the supervision of the Orange County Supervising Attorney. The Community Advocate must be fluent in Vietnamese and English, and will be responsible in assisting the coordination and execution of naturalization workshops with the OC Immigration & Citizenship Unit.  In addition to assisting with logistics and planning for naturalization workshops, the Community Advocate will also assist in a wide array of administrative and logistical tasks related to outreach and education of various ethnic communities in Orange County. This may include developing partnerships with community-based organization, government entities and non-traditional outreach partners. The Community Advocate must also answer helpline calls from low-income, Vietnamese-speaking individuals, in the areas of citizenship and other immigration matters.  The Community Advocate will also provide application support at naturalization clinics and administrative support in the areas of: data entry, client intake, case management and document preparations.
 
Responsibilities and Duties: 
  • Assisting at on-site and offsite legal clinics, ensuring proper work flow at events;
  • Conduct outreach and education to local communities;
  • Coordinate efforts with external partners, volunteers, and staff;
  • Update internal and external event calendars regularly;
  • Answer helpline calls from low-income, Vietnamese Speaking individuals;
  • Assess legal matters, consult with Advancing Justice - OC attorneys and provide in-language assistance;
  • Provide brief services to callers with the support of the OC Supervising Attorney, the OC Staff Attorney or the Citizenship Coordinator;
  • Provide naturalization application assistance to lawful permanent residents under the supervision of an attorney within the OC Immigration & Citizenship Unit;
  • Work closely with the OC Supervising Attorney, Citizenship Coordinator, and the OC Regional Director to provide any additional logistical and coordination support as directed.
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor Degree (relevant degree a plus);
  • Bilingual fluency in Vietnamese required;
  • Experience assisting immigrant, limited English speaking and/or low-income clients;
  • Experience or familiarity with AANHPI and/or Orange County community with a preference for strong ties to the local Vietnamese community;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Must be self-directed, organized, comfortable working independently and have the ability to initiate and coordinate projects in a timely manner;
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends; and
  • Valid driver’s license, liability insurance, and access to an automobile or alternative transportation.
Salary: DOE plus possible bilingual supplement, if applicable.  A benefit package includes paid medical, dental, vision insurance, and retirement plan.
