Asian Journal: CA increases education funding, underrepresented students benefitted

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Jerry Brown approved the 2016-2017 state budget on Monday, June 27, which includes historic education legislation that would improve educational opportunity and make college more accessible for all students.

The bill’s signing includes a minimum guarantee of $71.9 billion allocated to K-12 schools and the CCC this year, which is the highest level in state history, according to a statement from Brown’s office.

In his new book, Earning Admission: Real Strategies for Getting Into Highly Selective Colleges, the strategist Greg Kaplan urges Asians not to identify as such on their applications. “Your child should decline to state her background if she identifies with a group that is overrepresented on campus even if her name suggests affiliation,” he advises parents, also referencing Jews.

Asian American Press: ‘College for All’ legislation enacted in California

SACRAMENTO (June 27, 2016) — California Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday signed the state budget, including two budget trailer bills, SB 828 and AB 1602, that together enact landmark legislation to improve college access and readiness for all California students.

Due to the tremendous leadership of Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León, California students of all backgrounds – especially students who are low income, English learners, or foster youth – will have greater opportunity to attend and graduate from the state’s four-year public universities.

National AAPI Leaders Applaud U.S. Supreme Court Decision in Affirmative Action Case

LOS ANGELES -  Asian Americans Advancing Justice (Advancing Justice), the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) and the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) applaud the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion released today in Fisher v. University of Texas. The Court ruled [4-3] in favor of the consideration of race as part of a holistic review of an applicant in university admissions processes.

 

More than 150 Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Organizations Support Affirmative Action in Higher Education
