Advancing Justice-LA Encourages Community to Enroll in Health Coverage Before January 15th Deadline

LOS ANGELES, CA -- Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles (Advancing Justice-LA) encourages community members to enroll into qualified health plans offered by Covered California, the state's marketplace for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA, or Obamacare). Unlike most other states, Californians have until January 15th to enroll, which means their coverage will begin on February 1st.
Community members may have heard about whether the ACA is still in effect because of a federal court decision published on December 14, 2018, where a federal judge in Texas ruled the entirety of the ACA unconstitutional. While the decision makes its way through the appeals process where 17 state attorney generals are seeking to protect the ACA, the ACA continues to be in effect. Regardless of the outcome of the federal ruling, any individual with an ACA health plan will have health coverage and will not lose access to their coverage in 2019.
Health coverage has been integral to maintaining a person's overall well-being and is essential in addressing the significant health disparities for many marginalized and immigrant communities. Over a million Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) in California alone have gained access to health coverage since 2013 as a result of the ACA.
Advancing Justice-LA strongly encourages the community to continue enrolling in health coverage. To enroll, individuals can contact us at (213) 241-0262 or contact a Covered California Navigator partner to speak to a Certified Enrollment Counselor who can provide in-language support. Additionally, individuals may apply directly through the Covered California website ( to learn more, sign up for, or renew a plan before the window closes on January 15, 2019.
