Advancing Justice Ready to Protect Affirmative Action in Trial

LOS ANGELES, CA – Following the #DefendDiversity Week of Action, today marks the start of the trial Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) v. Harvard University, a case that puts the future of affirmative action into question.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice (Advancing Justice) will represent four students who will testify during the trial.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice, an affiliation of five civil rights organizations, issues the following statement:

“Affirmative action policies help improve the prospects of Americans in their careers and lives. They have helped Asian American communities achieve parity in jobs and opportunities after years of discrimination.

The nation’s leading civil rights organizations and millions of Asian Americans agree that affirmative action is a crucial policy. Yet, Asian Americans are being used as a wedge to uphold a white nationalist agenda that will destroy decades of civil rights progress.

The lawsuit filed by SFFA is an attack on racial justice, social mobility, and communities of color hidden behind the cover of Asian American discrimination. Unequal opportunities in grades K-12 impact children of color and children of immigrants and refugees. The impact of this lawsuit will go beyond just college admissions and affect job prospects and career mobility as well.

Affirmative action helps ensure that these communities get a fair chance at succeeding in life, and that is why this policy must be preserved.

Advancing Justice will fight to protect diversity on campuses and equal opportunity for Asian Americans and all communities of color.”
