Equal Justice Works Fellow

Alam, Esq.

Hammad Alam is an attorney and Equal Justice Works Fellow in Advancing Justice - LA’s Impact Litigation unit. Hammad’s fellowship project focuses on protecting and advancing Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) and other AANHPI students’ rights in the education context. Hammad engages in community education campaigns with AMEMSA communities across Southern California, advises legislators on policy to expand language access and address education issues impacting AMEMSA and other students, and provides direct representation to students and families as they navigate school district policies and procedures when facing discrimination, bullying, or harassment.

In addition to Hammad’s K-12 education work, Hammad helps lead Advancing Justice - LA’s work against surveillance, national security, and counterterrorism policies and programs such as “Countering Violent Extremism,” or “CVE.” Working together with local and statewide coalitions, Hammad engages in litigation to demand accountability from public agencies developing and implementing CVE programs, educates policymakers and directly impacted communities, and helps devise strategies to address and ultimately dismantle such programs.

Hammad began his legal career as a federal litigator before serving as a law clerk in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California. He graduated from UCLA School of Law with a specialization in Critical Race Studies, and holds a graduate degree in theology, with a focus in Islamic Studies, from Harvard.
