Yates

Billy Yates is an ESL/Civics Instructor, teaching adult learners English, civics, and history in preparation for naturalization as part of the Citizenship Project. He comes from the student and labor movements, having previously worked organizing nurses to build collective power at the workplace in the LA and DC metro areas. As the son of a formerly undocumented mother from the Philippines, and having worked with immigrant nurses from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, he is passionate about the intersections of language access, labor, and civic engagement. Prior to the nurses’ union, Billy organized on campus at UT-Austin, organizing students in solidarity with workers at home and abroad.

Billy volunteers with the LA Public Library and LGBT Center. He speaks Mandarin and German and studies literature at Los Angeles City College.
