Staff Attorney

Mahmud, Esq.

Meeran Mahmud is a Staff Attorney for Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Los Angles' Immigration and Citizenship Project. She provides legal assistance and consultations to immigrants wishing to undergo the process of naturalization, particularly those with complex criminal or immigration histories. Mahmud provides legal assistance at citizenship workshops held by Advancing Justice-LA as well as by partner organizations serving the Korean, Filipino, Cambodian,  Vietnamese, Pacific Islander, and South Asian communities. In addition, Mahmud represents asylum seekers in federal immigration court.
Prior to joining Advancing Justice-LA, Mahmud was a volunteer attorney at the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles in their Immigration Unit and Torture Survivors Project. She was also an intern at the Los Angeles Community Action Network. She was honored for her work at those organizations by the State Bar of California, which presented its President's Pro Bono Service Award to her in October 2013. 
Mahmud received a master of laws degree from UCLA School of Law in 2011, specializing in both human rights and social justice law, and tax law. She received her bachelor of laws from King's College London, England.
